Kiwi Summer

It wouldn’t be a Kiwi summer if we weren’t outside exploring what our beautiful environment has to offer here. We like to refer to the space as a ‘hidden away gem’ as our outdoor area has so much to offer for our Tamariki (children).

Over this past summer it has been very hot and Te Rā has been shinning down on us. Here at Best-Start Leeds Street we like to ensure that our Tamariki are being sun smart and are understanding how we can look after our bodies. The Kaiako (teachers) here have been doing a lot of intentional teaching with the Tamariki on how we dress, what we eat, and how we can have fun in the sun. One thing that we have found our Tamariki love to get engage in is our water play.

Splashy splash let’s get wet and let our imagination run! Our Tamariki have been learning while having fun in the water, such as warm and cold, floating and sinking, colours of the water, and refining their fine motor skills. It is very significant to us that we are extending on the Tamariki interest as this gives the Tamariki the agency to lead their own learning. Another key part of summer is looking into the foods we eat and what is healthy for our bodies. We have just won a healthy heart award meaning we are ensuring the Tamariki are getting the right nurturance, physical activities and so on.

Over the summer we have done lots of baking with the Tamariki, one recipes I found the Tamariki enjoy was our smoothie bowl. The Tamariki were thrilled to be involved in the making progress of these and how there were different steps to be taken t make the yummy end result. This exposed the Tamariki to pre-literacy and pre-mathematic skills when scooping, pouring, measuring, counting, and timing.

At BestStart Leeds Street there is always so much to offer, and we are wanting to keep growing, empowering, and fostering these opportunities for our Tamariki and Whānau here. Let’s have fun while learning lots here at Leeds street!!
