There is lots of awesome learning to be had playing with water, but it’s also a great way to cool down in the hot Gisborne summers. Korikori wai is a big part of our curriculum in the Pikopiko infant and toddler class.

Watering the garden in our natural environment and learning about looking after Papatuanuku is a daily part of our play and learning. We also use the sprinklers to promote our wellbeing by cooling us off. Mixing water and sand in the sandpit is always a winner as we learn about how the properties of sand change when they get wet. What a great way to learn about science. Tamariki enjoy splashing and floating things in rivers and lakes created in the sandpit. We have lots of awesome water toys to enjoy in the water troughs and with the hoses. For those that love art, water is a fun and clean way to paint the environment outdoors

Water play offers so much learning for all ages. In the Pikopiko class tamariki start to gain confidence in and control of their bodies as well as social skills and language when they work alongside others, sharing space and resources. Most of all tamariki get the opportunity to explore and use thinking and reasoning (cause and effect, trial and error, problem solving, math, science and more,) as they start to figure out the world around them. Most of all, it’s lots of fun and a great way to promote emotional wellbeing and happiness!
