Language and Communication.

At Kindy, we have a centre plan based on Language and Communication.

To extend the tamariki on this, the kaiako have been planning learning experiences with this in mind!

Today it was Gruffalo making! The Gruffalo story written by Julia Donaldson is a firm favourite with the tamariki at BestStart Oamaru Kindy!

The tamariki were excited and eager to get started. They set to work making their very own Gruffalo using various resources, including; boxes, tape, colouring-in sheets, felts and scissors!

This activity was so much fun, and the tamariki enjoyed retelling the story of the Gruffalo to each other as they created their own Gruffalo.

The discussions around the story and the repetition in the story are where the tamariki are supported with their language and communication.

There were also other wonderful skills on display, including; creativity -mathematics -turn-taking/sharing -literacy skills and more.

Once the Gruffalos were complete, they went on different journeys all around Kindy. Some even went on the slide and the monkey bars! Some went on the hunt for the big bad mouse from The Gruffalo book!

Books and storytelling are key areas of play that support children with listening, speaking, reading, and writing. There are many engaging ways to support children's learning that will help them to be confident readers and writers.

Through their artwork, children represent ideas and things they are familiar with like whanau, home life and the things around them.

Teachers support children's communication skills by asking them to describe their creations.
