Our tamariki have been very interested in playing ice cream shop over the last few weeks. Kaiako Jasmine decided to help them set up an actual ice cream shop in the centre in order to extend their learning. We made our own ice cream with condensed milk and cream which our tamariki decided to flavour with raspberry, vanilla and chocolate chip.

One of our tamariki also suggested that we have an ice cream truck that could drive around selling ice creams so we made that out of a cardboard box too. It has been such a great opportunity to foster our tamariki's rangatiratanga by brainstorming with them and incorporating their ideas! As we nurture their identity of themselves as strong, competent learners who are able to lead their own learning, our Kaiako are helping our tamariki develop into confident and capable learners who are well set on their learning pathway. Through the course of the inquiry, our tamariki have been encouraged to develop their language skills in a variety of ways...one of the skills Kaiako Jasmine really focused on was using written language in order to communicate our thoughts and feelings with others.

This supports our focus on Being School Ready in the Kahu Room as using verbal and written language effectively is one of the ways in which we can support our tamariki's pathway to Kura. We have also helped our tamariki develop their ability to work together as there has been lots of group work to create our posters, flyers, ice cream truck and ice cream itself...yet another way that we are helping our tamariki Be School Ready. This inquiry has been such a wonderful learning opportunity for both tamariki and Kaiako in the Kahu Room at Best Start Burnside!
