Over the past week in the Pukeko Room we have been discussing and creating things about ANZAC day.

We read a story about ANZAC parades and why these happen. This led to discussions about soldiers and wars especially World War One and Two. We explained that some of the soldiers did not come back to New Zealand because they died. Because of these soldiers and wars, we live in (relatively) peaceful countries now and we are safe. Therefore, we celebrate ANZAC day, to remember the people, and the people, who still fight for our safety today.

We had a special mat time with the ANZAC art that we created.

Another special part of our celebrations was making ANZAC biscuits. Anzac biscuits have long been associated with World War I as it was claimed that the biscuits were sent by whanau to their sons who were fighting abroad as they didn’t spoil on the long trip to them.

We measured, mixed, rolled, cooked and then ate them for afternoon tea. Yummy!
