Learning About Culture Through Food

Today, our tamariki had a special hands-on learning experience as they had the opportunity to make their own sushi for lunch, with our teachers supporting and joining in too.

This was a lovely way for the children to explore and learn more about another culture through food, conversation and shared experiences.

The children were involved in the whole process, carefully choosing their ingredients, placing them onto the rice and having a go at rolling their own sushi. There was lots of excitement as they talked about the different foods, textures, colours and flavours they were using.

Teacher Samjoo set everything up with ingredients such as chicken, carrot, cucumber, tuna, avocado and other salad ingredients.

This experience supported our tamariki to develop their fine motor skills, independence, confidence and communication, while also encouraging them to try something new.

It was wonderful to see the children taking pride in making their own lunch and then sitting together to enjoy what they had created.

Learning about different cultures through food helps our tamariki develop curiosity, respect and an appreciation for the diverse world around them. Experiences like this make learning meaningful, fun and memorable.

The best part was definitely being able to eat our delicious homemade sushi together for lunch! We love food at BestStart Mangere East!
