Celebrating different cultures and languages is very important to the kaiako and tamariki at BestStart Albany. We support children in learning to take pride in where they come from and sharing their culture with the rest of the children. Today we have learnt how the Eastern European countries celebrate Easter by dying eggs.

Some of our children that originate from this part of the world and celebrate Orthodox Easter, shared their traditional ways of celebrating. We dyed some eggs, baked some special bread, and celebrated together. The children had an opportunity to learn how other parts of the world celebrate this well- known holiday, but also to learn about little bit of science and teamwork. We were able to see how the egg’s shell changed after boiling them and also watched the eggshell change colour as we were dipping them in the different dye.

We all had to work together and support our younger friends to hold the eggs and dye them without breaking. What a great experience! Ka Pai!
