Learning about Matariki with BestStart Queenstown

This month, our oldest tamariki, the Matakauri Class, have really been enjoying reading and retelling Maori legends and stories with each other.

We wanted to focus on extending the children's knowledge of Maori legends around Aotearoa and share stories from our tamariki and their whanau.

The tamariki have also been enjoying stories such as Maui and the Sun, Maui and the Giant Ika, The Creation Story and Matau, the Giant of Lake Wakatipu. The children are learning where they are from and exploring their identities, and so we have been focusing on their individual mihi/pepeha too.

Amongst other activities, our tamariki have been enjoying acting, re-telling stories, weaving, using rakau sticks, and using puppets to tell their own stories!
