Our current project planning is around ‘occupations’. The tamariki have been enjoying learning about different careers within the centre. We have had many discussions around what their parents do for jobs and this has sparked some interest in what they could become when they grow up. We have been utilising our weekly excursions to expose some of the tamariki to the different professions that some of our parents do.

We have visited a boat shop, the Police Station, Vet and Fire Station. With each experience we were given a tour of the facilities, we got to hear about what they do throughout their day, see what tools and equipment they use, ask questions, and build our knowledge of our community and expose us to new experiences. Alongside the tamariki our kaiako have also learnt a lot through going along on these excursions. When we get back to the centre we are able to revisit our learning through the many photos taken and share our experience with the others that didn't get to go.

The tamariki are learning to make connections with the wider community, they are developing their listening and questioning skills. They are developing their knowledge of a range of different professions and what they entail. It has been a great learning experience and we cannot wait to see where else this planning might take us.
