At BestStart Dannemora, we really value the relationships our tamariki form with each other. Whanaungatanga (building relationships and connections) is an important part of our everyday learning.

Having positive friendships helps our tamariki feel happy, confident and secure, while strengthening their sense of mana whenua (belonging and connection) within our centre.

Throughout the day, we see many lovely moments of friendship happening naturally. Tamariki choose to sit together, invite others into their play, laugh and talk with each other, share resources and offer manaakitanga (care and kindness) towards their friends.

We see this while they are building with blocks, completing puzzles, enjoying pretend play, joining group games and exploring outdoors together.

Of course, learning to play with others can sometimes bring challenges. Tamariki may have different ideas, want the same resource or need to wait for their turn. We see these moments as valuable opportunities for learning.

Our kaiako are there to support children to use their words, listen to each other, understand how others may be feeling and find ways to solve problems together.

As kaiako, we intentionally provide experiences where children can connect and work alongside one another. Small-group activities, games, creative experiences and shared projects provide opportunities for children to communicate, cooperate, practise mahi tahi (working together) and learn from each other.

It is wonderful to see these relationships becoming stronger over time. Through everyday play and friendships, our tamariki are developing kindness, empathy, communication, cooperation and respect for others.

He waka eke noa – we are all in this together.

At BestStart Dannemora, we are proud to provide a place where our tamariki can belong, build friendships and grow together.
