At BestStart Maui Tui Ruma (our preschool room for 3–5 year olds), learning happens naturally through play.
Our environment offers a wide range of experiences across 16 areas of play, including science and nature, sensory play, construction, dramatic play, carpentry, and more. Play is the most meaningful way for children to learn. Through these rich experiences, our kaiako (teachers) intentionally support early literacy and mathematical thinking in fun and engaging ways.
For example, children build counting skills as we count together during turn-taking on the swing. They explore measurement and height using children's height charts, develop fine motor skills through drawing and colouring, and begin recognising letters and symbols through creative activities such as writing or finding name letters on bottle caps.
These everyday moments of play are filled with learning opportunities. Tamariki (children) develop confidence in recognising symbols, making meaning, and building early literacy and numeracy skills that prepare our children for school.
