Lately, the children in the Ruaumoko room love to play on the playground. Both our younger and older children race to the playground as soon as the door is open. The children are exploring and experimenting with how their bodies can be used. It is at this age when our babies are discovering their bodies, learning how to move, and developing their gross motor skills. Over time, their confidence is growing and they are able to keep practicing until they achieve their goal of being able to climb up onto the boxes, slide down the slide, or simply move from one place to another. Many of our younger children copy how the older ones use the playground and attempt to do the same things.

As a team, we are providing a safe and secure environment where everyone has the opportunity to join in and try things at their own pace. This type of experience is a great way to promote safe risk-taking as they are able to follow their ideas about climbing, going through the tunnel, or sliding down the slide while having the support of a teacher if required. Part of this is that they learn about spatial awareness as they position themselves on the playground equipment so they don’t fall off.
