From first steps to climbing with confidence, our youngest tamariki are developing vital motor skills through exploration and play in the Ruaumoko room—with encouragement from kaiako every step of the way.

Recently in the Ruaumoko room, our younger children have been exploring and learning how their bodies move. From crawling to standing while holding an object, climbing, and walking—each milestone is a big achievement for our tamariki.

Each step requires dedication and persistence as children work to move from one stage to the next. At this stage, they’re discovering how to control their bodies while developing essential gross motor skills.

These foundational skills are used daily and are crucial for future success. It’s a special accomplishment when children reach these milestones—the joy and pride on their faces are priceless.

During this time, it’s important that younger children feel supported. Teachers gently encourage tamariki to try new things, offering help when needed so that every child has the chance to explore and grow at their own pace.

As their confidence builds, so too does their willingness to keep exploring, taking on new challenges and continuing their learning journey.
