Learning through celebration, Eid in our Montessori Community

We recently shared a beautiful and meaningful Eid celebration with our Muslim whānau here at the centre.

It was a warm, joyful occasion filled with learning, connection, and community spirit.

Our families came together to help decorate the classroom and thoughtfully prepare gift bags to mark the celebration. During mat time, our Muslim whānau generously shared their culture and traditions, teaching us about Ramadan and Eid.

Tamariki learned about the significance of fasting, the importance of kindness, and how this special time is celebrated around the world. Families brought along treasured items such as a copy of the Quran, prayer mats, meaningful books, and countdown calendars that highlight acts of kindness throughout Ramadan.

We also enjoyed a delicious shared morning tea, where everyone had the chance to taste a variety of foods from different cultures. One of the highlights was the opportunity for tamariki to experience henna, with beautiful designs created as part of the celebration.

In keeping with our Montessori philosophy, we value creating an environment that honours and celebrates the diverse cultures within our community. Through real-life experiences, hands-on learning, and meaningful contributions from whānau, tamariki develop respect, empathy, and a genuine understanding of the world around them.

Celebrations like Eid provide a rich opportunity for children to learn from one another and to appreciate the beauty of different traditions. It was a truly special time of togetherness, learning, and respect.

We feel grateful to our Muslim community for sharing this experience with us.

Eid Mubarak!
