Today in our learning environment, tamariki explored literacy in a fun and meaningful way through hands-on play.

Using colourful building blocks, children carefully created letters and began forming names on baseboards.

As part of our Set for School programme, we promote children’s learning in both literacy and numeracy through play, making learning enjoyable, meaningful, and naturally embedded in everyday experiences.

This experience supported early literacy development, as tamariki:

  • Recognised and identified letters in their own names
  • Began connecting letter shapes with sounds
  • Strengthened their understanding of how names are formed

In the image, a child is deeply engaged, using focus and fine motor skills to carefully place each block to form letters. This type of activity not only supports letter recognition, but also strengthens concentration, problem-solving, and perseverance. Learning through play allows tamariki to explore at their own pace while making meaningful connections. By using familiar words like their names, children develop a sense of identity and belonging, while building confidence in their emerging literacy skills.

We love seeing tamariki take pride in their creations and celebrate their growing skills as learners. Together with whānau, we continue to nurture confident learners who are building strong foundations for their future learning journey.
