BestStart Melling

At BestStart Melling, in Hutt Central, we create a warm, welcoming place where children aged 3 months to 5 years can learn, explore and feel a strong sense of belonging.

We believe children learn best when they can connect their learning to the world around them. That’s why we make the most of our local area, exploring the stories, people, places and natural environment that make Melling and Wellington special. Tamariki learn about local stories, including the pūrākau of the two taniwha brothers, Ngake and Whātaitai, through storytelling, play and hands-on experiences.

Our children are also encouraged to be part of their wider community. We regularly visit local places such as the supermarket, café, pet shop, medical centre, dentist and nearby retirement home, while welcoming members of our community into the centre to share their knowledge and experiences. These real-world experiences help children build confidence, independence and an understanding of the world around them.

We’re proud of the diversity of our BestStart Melling whānau. We celebrate the different cultures, backgrounds and identities that make our centre unique, with regular events and opportunities for families to share what is important to them. We want every child and family to feel welcomed, respected and valued.

By working closely with our children, whānau and community, we create an environment where tamariki can develop a strong sense of belonging, build meaningful relationships and understand that they have an important place in their community.
