Learning through play for tamariki

Creativity has captured the nga tamariki interest over the past month here in the Nursery. They have been involved in many different experiences, exploring different mediums such as painting with ice, painting with magnolia branches, and painting with feathers.

They have been investigating the textures of clay and cornflour gloop and developing their working theories on how they can manipulate this material into something else. Sawdust has also been another material that has been used and set up on the tuff tray with dinosaur bones and the animals for the tamariki to dig and find on their own. This has encouraged group participation as well as an opportunity for the tamariki to express themselves and explore new materials.

We are looking forward to diving deeper into our creative experiences and facilitating more opportunities like this.
Matariki has been a big celebration for the Best Start Te Whariki tamariki and the Kaiako.

To celebrate Matariki with our Nursery whanau, we facilitated our first whanau evening and had fish and chips together under the stars. The families had the opportunity to communicate with each other as well as their child's key Kaiako, while taking photos wearing different props and having fun.

The tamariki have also been involved in experiences related to Matariki, such as baking stars, learning the Matariki macarena, and making vegetable soup for lunch.

We have welcomed new younger tamariki to our Nursery, and this has sparked a very strong interest in our toddlers with the baby dolls. We have observed on numerous occasions many of our tamariki rocking a baby doll, feeding the doll and even just offering a cuddle.

We have been observing Manaakitanga and noticing the kindness, care they have for these dolls as well as our new younger nga pepi who have been settling into the Nursery.
