In preschool, we have been introducing the ENGAGE approach, which our kaiako learnt during the professional training.

This fun and intentional programme supports tamariki in developing self-regulation skills through meaningful play-based activities—an essential foundation for success at primary school and beyond.

The ENGAGE games help tamariki learn to sit and listen, follow instructions, take turns, manage frustration, and express their emotions in appropriate ways. These activities are designed around three domains of self-regulation: behavioural (doing), cognitive (thinking), and emotional (feeling).

One of the favourite games is Pass the Beanbag, where tamariki sit in a circle and pass the beanbag while listening closely to music cues. This supports the behavioural domain by helping children practise impulse control and cooperation. In the Snap game, tamariki develop cognitive skills like focus, memory, and quick decision-making. Lastly, during art and drawing sessions, children explore the emotional domain, learning to express feelings through creativity and build emotional awareness.

Through these games, tamariki are not only having fun but are also strengthening vital skills to support school readiness and the transition to primary school. The ENGAGE approach brings joy to learning while laying the groundwork for confident, thoughtful, and emotionally aware learners. Ka pai, tamariki!
