Learning through Sensory Play

In the koru room (infant and toddler room) we have been spending lots of time exploring through sensory activities such as painting, foam, playdough, sensory bags, and many more fun activities! These activities enable the children to use their senses to develop their own working theories and make sense of the world around them.

Sensory play also encourages learning through exploration, curiosity, problem-solving, and creativity. It helps to build nerve connections in the brain and encourages the development of language and motor skills. Motor skills are predetermined actions that involve your babies' movement. Sensory play encourages babies and toddlers to move and participate in play, often using repetitive movements.

There is so much learning that happens through this type of play experience, which is why we as teachers believe in free play all day. Sometimes this is teacher-led when these types of play experiences are set up. But then it also can change to child-led as most of the time the children then go on to create their own play experiences by moving the play or bringing in other resources to the play space.

All the sensory activities we make here in the koru room are easy to make at home too and a great experience for you to share with your child.
