Learning to use scissors

1

In the Kea room we have been focused on creativity and refining our fine motor skills. During this activity we decided to get some colour paper and practice using the scissors. During this activity our tamariki were required to share space and resources, as lots of children wanted to join in on this activity it required turn taking and patience as they waited for someone to finish before they got their turn. Our Tamariki experimented with different ways to hold the scissors to best cut the paper. This activity required perseverance and resilience as they worked through different strategies, often working through their frustration until they found success. The teachers supported the tamariki through this experience by using teaching strategies such as encouragement and positive reinforcement. Working with the tamariki through questioning to find a solution. During this activity the children were also able to practice their verbal communication skills, narrating what they are doing as well as including their peers in their play and sharing resources. During this activity lots of learning was taking place. Children are practicing the pincer grip required for holding a pencil and refining their fine motor skills. During this activity the children also enjoyed tearing up the paper, this helps improve hand strength as well as aiding the endurance of the small muscles in children’s hands.
