Learning Together at BestStart Sir Tristram
Here in the Kikorangi Room at BestStart Sir Tristram we love learning together! Our tamariki have established a strong sense of belonging and have become familiar with our routines of the day - including mat times! Mat times are a favourite part of our 1-2 year olds' day. It all starts with the ringing of the bell and the start of our 'clean up' where the children know it is time to take responsibility for looking after our resources and putting them away to prepare for mat time.
We then sit down together, encouraging all our friends to come over and join us. We sing songs in Te Reo Maaori and we sing songs with resources such as '5 Little Speckled Frogs.' This is a valued and beneficial part of learning together for our tamariki for numerous reasons including the development and encouragement of their language and communication skills, practising turn-taking, and being immersed in songs and stories from Te Ao Maaori.
These interactive learning opportunities also prepare tamariki for future transitions into older aged rooms as they are engaged in sustained learning experiences that hold their interest and encourage them to become involved. Mat times are also a fun and interactive way for our tamariki to learn more about their wider world!
