Library Time - Building on Early Literacy

Lynette, our outreach librarian, came into the centre today for her first termly visit in term 2. She worked her early literacy magic through storytelling, puppets, board stories, puka puka (books) and waiata (songs). The children love how she changes her sessions to meet the needs of each classroom and the children attending - right through from nursery to prep classroom set up for being school ready.

The nursery tamariki had lots of fun and learning around a story of a ball. As the story unfolded, the children had a fun interactive session with the ball in question and practised turn-taking and sharing as Lynette told the story of the ball. The pictures attached are of the preschool tamariki (children) enjoying a very lively and animated story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They loved it and were quite disappointed when it was time for Lynette to wind up her session with them for the day as she moved to join the prep-room children who participated in a re-enactment of Little Red Riding Hood.

This is the first session this term of our formalised early literacy program for the centre. Next on the agenda will be our teacher-led family workshops. The workshops offer opportunities for families to learn about early literacy concepts, including reading and ways this can be supported at home.

The complete program involves:

  • An initial outreach librarian early literacy session in centre.
  • 2 workshops for families with one of our prep classroom.
  • Kaiako presenting and sharing information on how to support early reading literacy concepts.
  • A family/child/teacher visit to our big local library.
  • A 4-year-old and family early literacy games session with resource pack.
  • An in-centre excursion to our smaller local community library.

Watch this space as we move through each part of the program, we’ll report back in on how it is all going this term!
