One rainy day we were all inside and wanted to do something quiet. Therefore, we started to practice our writing skills and develop our pincer grip. Some of our tamariki started drawing different shapes on the salt trays while others wanted to do their writing on paper. We have quite a few literacy resources available for tamariki and tracing on the writing whiteboard pads is a favourite. Tracing curved and straight lines, circles and other shapes refines children's muscles and coordination, which makes it easier for them to transition to writing.

Some tamariki are really into writing their names and words, so we have also been practising writing words using the sky, grass, ground analogy. Some letters touch the sky, some letters stay in the grass, most letters stand on the ground, and some letters dig under the ground. This is what our tuakana children have been learning. This is also an area where our parents wants us to focus on and one of their common aspirations for their children. They really enjoyed being creative when they were writing their names using the above analogy.
