At Beststart Manuroa, kaiako has been providing literacy-rich opportunities and setting up an environment with a wide range of open-ended resources and provocations to deepen children’s current interests, ideas, and working theories. Last month, tamariki enjoyed a variety of numeracy activities.

They explored numbers, learned number formation, and develop number knowledge and recognition skills. They worked alongside others in small groups and enjoyed board games such as bingo number game, and shell hunt. Tamariki is empowered to make decisions of their own learning. They chose a letter of the week through collaborative decision-making. Based on their choice of letter kaiako planned different art and craft activities where tamariki actively participated and created beautiful masterpieces of the letters using popsicle sticks, natural resources, felt pens, and loose parts.

Furthermore, choosing a book of the week is another fun for our tamariki. They together decide on a book, read it for a week, and learn to value books and stories. Kaiako assesses tamariki learning by providing them opportunities to retell the story alongside extending their learning through open-ended questions and meaningful conversation about the book at mat time. This strategy magically works for tamariki as this cultivates a love of reading, ignites imagination and curiosity, and develops their abilities to remember stories.
