Friday 12th of February saw us celebrate International CHD Awareness at BestStart Doncaster Drive Kindy by holding a Little Heart Day, especially as one of our staff has a child which is affected by this disease.  We dressed in red and shared an awesome chocolate shaped heart and cupcakes for morning tea.

Continuing the ‘Heart’ theme saw some awesome art activities take place.  The first one involved a bike.  A heart was put on a tricycle wheel and then the tamariki spun this while adding paint.  The result created a centrifugal force whereby the paint was pushed outwards and mixed across the paper because of the spinning wheel.

Our next ‘Heart’ art activity involved ‘Resist’ art.  The tamariki had to draw on their heart with crayon and then paint over this with dye.  The dye would not penetrate the crayon, hence it resisted it and the result was some beautiful hearts.

Our final ‘Heart’ art activity was collage art.  Tamariki decorated their heart with pieces of paper, felt and stickers, creating a collage picture.

This is an example of extending children’s learning as they try new things following the same theme or interest.  Process art like the activities above require steps to be followed to reach the end result.  Great learning outcomes are achieved such as listening and following instructions, turn-taking, communication, and opportunities to explore and use their creative sides.  When tamariki do this they are laying down foundations which help and enhance their problem-solving skills.

It was great to be able to support our staff member and her daughter and raise some money for the Heart Foundation as well because “E heke waka noa” – we are all in this together.
