Local Curriculum in action at BestStart Maunu Village
What’s a better symbol for summer than a sunflower? Sunflowers are especially popular at the moment due to a local sunflower field opening up. The field is full of giant sunflowers that tower over adults’ heads.
Here in the Kiwi Room, we brought this aspect of our local curriculum into the classroom by setting up a collage area for tamariki to create their own sunflowers. Tamariki were provided with a range of different collage materials in yellow, orange, and green, with a sunflower picture set up as the provocation.
In the Kiwi Room, we focus on art as a process, not a product. Each child is an artist, and how they see the provocation and set about creating their own sunflower is completely individual.
During this art experience, there is so much learning happening—although because it’s so fun, the tamariki would never realise!
Some of the fundamental learning includes:
- Turn-taking and waiting for their turn
- Fine motor skills
- Colour recognition and matching
- Design skills
- Concentration
- Problem-solving
- Understanding shapes and sizes
Want to create your own sunflower? Come visit us in the Kiwi Room! Our art area is always stocked and ready to go.
