In February 2019 two of our teachers embarked on a journey to take part in the Ministry of Education’s Oral Language and Literacy Initiative (OLLi). Meg and Ange were excited and eager to improve knowledge and practice around oral language development during this 7 session course.

With the help of Louise Holdcroft (Speech and language Therapist) our teachers were given simple yet effective literacy promoting strategies to build children’s language development. These strategies were shared with our entire team and our practices have shifted to better support children’s language and early literacy skills.

After implementing the OLLi strategies we have found children far more engaged in books. We are able to support children to grow their vocabulary while also enhancing cognitive abilities, such as imagination, problem solving and abstract thinking. We also have the tools to extend learning beyond the book through creating opportunities for children  to re-tell stories themselves.
