Each year in the Lunar calendar is represented by one of 12 zodiac animals such as the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. The Year 2024 is the year of the Dragon. The date of the Lunar New Year varies each year as it is based on the lunar calendar. It usually falls between January 21 and February 20.

Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is celebrated in communities all over the world. Celebrations include family gatherings, feasts, fireworks, and the exchange of red envelopes containing money. Within the Chinese zodiac, the dragon symbolizes power, strength, and wisdom.

They are believed to bring good luck. In our Beststart Kauri flats centre, we had the privilege of celebrating the Lunar New Year with our families. Our children were engaged in various cultural crafts work such as making fans, lanterns, and Dragon collages. Our talented teachers shared the stories behind the Lunar New Year celebration with our Children during mat time.

Moreover, children had an opportunity to learn about this beautiful cultural celebration through music and movement. We also made Dragon using cardboard boxes and our children participated well in the Dragon dance performance.
