One of our tamariki at BestStart Montessori Kapiti found out that she needed to go dairy free and was a bit upset to have to give up on the glass of milk she enjoys so much. Wendy, one of our Casa room kaiako, suggested that they could make some almond milk together.

Using a spoon our tamariki measured out one cup of almonds and put them into a bowl, then filled a jug with water and poured in enough to cover the almonds and then soaked them overnight.

The next day they were soft and ready to be blended  in the food processor along with three and a half cups of fresh water. The children watched the mixture change into a milky consistency. The next step was to pour the contents into a milk bag which was placed inside a jug. Wendy then showed the children how to squeeze the milk out. At afternoon tea time everyone wanted to try it and enjoyed it!
