Making our own blanket
Over the last couple of weeks we have been talking a lot at 4 year old group about the things we like to do in the weekend. There has been a lot of interest in one of our teacher’s hobby of sewing, so she decided to bring in her sewing machine for the children to enjoy the experience also. After a bit of discussion it was decided to make our own blanket for our play bed. Patience was well-rehearsed for this activity as it proved to be very popular, everyone had to wait for their turn.
Each child was able to select their own square of fabric, then using scrap material and they had a practice using the machine. After a little practice to work out how much pressure to put on the pedal to get the machine to go, it was time to sew the square on to the blanket. There was great excitement when the blanket was completed and the backing was put on by the teacher. Children really enjoyed looking for the square they selected and worked hard on.
Through this experience, the children all had the opportunity to developing their working theories on how things are made and how a sewing machine works. They also enjoyed the chance to try something new and gain the confidence to give it a try.
