A table is set up with a variety of nutritious kai such as yoghurt, raisins, mandarins and also slices of bread, vegemite and cheese. Tamariki take responsibility for filling their box with their lunch – this includes using a knife to butter the slices of bread and then ‘fill’ their bread to make a tasty sandwich. When they sit down with their friends for lunch, they are very excited to sit down with their own individual box of food.

Just some of the learning happening for the children:
* Perseverance as they butter their bread and make their sandwich.
* Self-confidence as they become more familiar with the regular routines expected for school
* Fine motor skills as they butter their bread and make their sandwich.
* They learn that they do not eat all their lunch, that they should eat their sandwich and leave some food for later in their day.

Making their own lunch box is an experience that provides rich learning for our tamariki that will support them as they prepare for their next learning journey at school.
