As infants and toddlers learn and develop, the most powerful way they do this is through their senses. The kaiako (teachers) in the Pipi (Under 2) room have been exploring alongside our tamariki (children) with different textures- is it warm? Is it cold? Is it squishy? Can we pinch, poke, sprinkle or pour it?

We value the importance of our tamariki having the time and space to really explore these different textures. Believe it or not, messy play gives children the opportunity to explore concepts such as cause and effect, trial and error, language development, early math and science concepts.... as well as building dispositions like concentration and exploration... WOW!

If you are feeling game at home, perhaps you could try a messy play activity- there are a lot of recipes on the internet, but it can be as easy as getting creative with water play- add some things to float and/or sink (flowers or leaves are great), scoops or containers to pour with or even something to change the color of the water! If you are anything like our kaiako, you will become as engaged in these activities as the tamariki!"
