Marne Street Matariki Celebrations
Twinkling in the winter sky just before dawn, Matariki (the Pleiades) signals the Māori New Year. During Matariki we celebrate our unique place in the world. We give respect to the whenua (land) on which we live and admiration to Papatuanuku (mother earth). Through Matariki we learn about those who came before us. Our history, our whānau, Matariki signals growth. It's a time of change, a time to prepare and a time for action. During Matariki we acknowledge what we have and what we have to give. Matariki celebrates the diversity of life. It's a celebration of Aotearoa's culture, language, spirit and people. We held our annual BestStart Marne St Matariki event on Thursday 20 July at an important landmark nearby, He Ara Kotahi. The night was so beautiful with rememberance lanterns being created, delicious Matariki soup made and served with the vegetables we all contributed, that were then put together by nga tamariki and our cook Kathleen. We had a beautiful performance and waiata sung by our tamariki and finished off the evening with a rememberance walk and star spotting across the bridge over our local Manawatu awa, surrounded by the starry sky that glittered above our maunga in the background.
