This week at BestStart Beckenham, our tamariki have been busy celebrated Matariki. The star cluster Matariki appears in our skies in the month of Pipiri (June–July), marking the start of the Māori New Year. It is a time to come together with your friends, whānau, and communities. It is about eating, reflecting, having fun, and looking forward to the year ahead. To celebrate this special time of year we had a fun filled week of activities. As part of our Matariki celebrations, we did paper weaving and wishing tree stars, making a wonderfully colourful display in our classroom. The teachers and children together planted new vegetables in the garden, discussing how we were recognising nature's part in Matariki. We also started learning a new waiata - E Papa Waiari - which we are using with our rakau sticks to follow the beat and rhythm. To finished off the week the children has a pyjama soup day. Where the children were invited to peel, grate and cut a variety of vegetables in preparing for our shared lunch of nice warm winter vegetable soup.
