At BestStart Tory Street, we celebrated Matariki with our whanau and tamariki. Our tamariki worked hard learning about Matariki and about the story of “Seven Sisters”.

Kaiako were teaching tamariki about Matariki and initiated many activities for them to do. Learning about Maori weaving, waiata, making paper chains, Maori shapes, and screen painting. We also made stars using strings and paper, origami stars and more.

Tamariki were also involved in many colouring activities using many different resources such as crayons, paint, shaving foam and dye.

Tamariki were learning “Twinkle twinkle Star” song in 4 different languages such as English, Te Reo Maori, Spanish and Chinese. This was a great achievement and our parents loved it.

Children developed a lot of confidence through learning how to do a play about “Matariki Seven Stars”. Parents were very happy and overjoyed to watch the play and proud of their children’s acting and remembering the lines for their dialogues.

Kaiako put a lot of effort making different costumes for the children for the play and tamariki were involved in this.

Tamariki and Kaiako made a vegetable soup for the event and Kumara bread. Everything went well and I am sure we all learnt something new (Ako) and enjoyed the teaching and learning.

Our vision at BestStart Tory Street is to “celebrate the universal language in our vibrant city” and this is a great example of how we acknowledge our Maori community at the same time celebrating other languages through waiata.
