Matariki Hākari

Matariki, the Māori New Year, is rich with tradition. At BestStart Johnstone Road Kindy tamariki have been very busy learning all about this important event in Maori culture.

We have been learning all about the star family, "The Seven Sisters". Tamariki was busy learning about stars by drawing, painting, and even out of play dough and clay by using a cookie cutter. Tamariki learned about seven sisters during mat time.

Tamariki also learned about weaving, poi making, drawing Koru, and kite making. We also have been very busy outside in our garden area, cleaning and preparing to grow new food. Children were busy exploring Maori culture throughout the week.

We celebrated Matariki day, a Maori new year, with Johnstones road kindy Whanau. We planned our Matariki day to be celebrants with our tamariki performances as our children prepared a concert on Maori songs.

All our Whanau were thrilled with the tamariki performance. Then, we all have done karakia before eating lunch. It was a shared Kai lunch. Also, our teaching team got an opportunity to talk to Whanau about each child's aspiration to work this coming year.
