Matariki (the Pleiades) signals the Māori New Year. For Māori, the appearance of Matariki heralds a time of remembrance, joy and peace. It’s a time to spend with whānau and friends – to enjoy kai (food), waiata (song), tākaro (games) and haka. Matariki is visible for 11 months, disappearing in Haratua (May/June) and reappearing in Piripi (late June/early July)

Matariki Macarena waiata is our way of remembering the 9 stars with actions. Both our tamariki and Kaiako enjoy this – that sometimes we all giggle when we get the arms moving to the wrong way.

Throughout the month we participated in various activities creating art pieces to represent the importance of the 9 stars.

The highlight of learning about Matariki is the sharing our amazing mahi our tamariki have done through a Matariki evening. Our tamariki also helped prepare the kai of soup – food associated with Tupuānuku and fruit salad – food associated with Tupuārangi.
