During June and July, BestStart Whangamata has been creating beautiful "Matariki Moments". Our tamariki (children) and Kaiako (Teachers) have been learning about the significance of Matariki and how to celebrate it authentically with whanau.

Through intentional teaching, our tamariki have been exposed to many new waiata (songs) and stories that reflect the special meaning of Matariki. The tamariki have had the opportunity to express their creativity through art. A popular art experience was one where tamariki raced golf balls around a tray with silver and gold paint. Through their artwork, tamariki represent ideas and things they are familiar with like whanau, home life and the things around them. We displayed the artwork on our wall so parents and whanau could view the masterpieces throughout Matariki. Another special learning moment was when one of our Kaiako made fry bread with tamariki and served it for afternoon kai. This opportunity allowed the tamariki to learn how to prepare and cook Matariki kai and share it with their Centre whanau. Every year BestStart Whangamata holds a Matariki Evening for parents and whanau to come and celebrate together.

Everyone is encouraged to dress in sparkly clothing and bring torches to take on a local walk. We sign waiata together, then walk to the local beach and look at the whetu (stars) above our local island named; Hauturu. This event allows our whanau to connect with the whenua (land) of Whangamata, enjoy time with the community, and participate in shared kai and signing. At BestStart Whangamata, we value authentic learning and connecting to our community all year round. We would love to meet you and build a relationship with your whanau, so book a Centre visit and start your journey at BestStart Whangamata today!
