Matariki Month at BestStart Hanley's Farm

Matariki is a special and joyous time for toddlers as they come together to celebrate this significant Maori cultural event. Matariki, also known as the Maori New Year, marks the rise of the Pleiades star cluster and is a time of reflection, gratitude, and new beginnings.

In the BestStart Toddler Room, the little ones gathered with excitement and anticipation, eager to participate in the Matariki month. They adorned themselves in colorful outfits, inspired by traditional Maori clothing, and eagerly learnt about the importance of Matariki through storytelling and interactive activities. Teachers and toddlers learnt new songs, sang along with the guitar, and practiced with poi.

The spirit of unity and togetherness came alive as the toddlers joined hands and formed a little dance circle. Guided by simple yet meaningful choreography, they joyfully performed Maori dances, celebrating the connections they have built with each other and the wider community.

Through this experience, the toddlers not only celebrated Matariki, but also cultivated an appreciation for Maori culture and its significance in New Zealand. They developed a sense of cultural identity and respect for the traditions that have shaped the country they call home. As the celebration came to a close, the toddlers carried the spirit of Matariki with them, fostering a sense of belonging and kinship that will stay with them as they continue to learn and grow.
