Even though the Matariki event is still some weeks away, our friends in the Kowhai Ruma began their preparations early by reading Matariki-related books, making stars, and dancing Matariki Macarena. It all started after the reading of "In Search of the Stars" puka, provided by Ruben the Road Safety Bear, who recently came to visit our centre and teach us all about road safety. Then afterward, left us some goodies in the form of books, pencils, and stickers. One of these was this book that teaches us about road safety in a fun way and also briefly tells us the story of Matariki - The Maori New Year, which signifies new beginnings and also when we wish upon a star our wishes can come true. Thus, we wanted to create some stars to celebrate the upcoming Matariki event. Tamariki had fun choosing a star to call their own, painting them in different colors, and adding glitter to them to make them really shine. During this activity tamariki showcased their amazing art skills, fine and gross motor skills, displaying a sense of Manaakitanga, Mana Tangata, Whanaungatanga, and Aroha by respectfully waiting for their turn, sharing the paint palette and nicely working alongside each other. Their mahi was then hung up on the ceiling in the Kowhai Ruma for them to revisit their previous learning. Karawe tamariki ma!
