Our Precious Gems room here at Beststart Karaka decided to make a vegetable soup in celebration of Matariki!

Matariki is a time for us to come together in celebration of the Maori New Year, a time to reflect and be thankful. Our whanau kindly donated many different vegetables for us to use, and both our tamariki and kaiako used our combined efforts to make our lovely soup. We also had some delicious homemade bread to have alongside our soup.

Our tamariki really enjoyed having a closer look at the vegetables we used. What they looked like, smelt like, and of course tasted like! Our kaiako and tamariki then sat down and had a group kai time and enjoyed our soup together.

Matariki provide opportunities for tamariki to recognise and understand their own and others cultures. Celebrating these differences fosters our ability to connect with our community based on common interests and educate and inspire our tamariki to unite as one.
