Matariki with BestStart Buchanans
Matariki at Buchanans Road is always a special time. Although this year, due to number restrictions, we didn't hold our usual whānau event, with our strong connections with our whānau, we incorporated what is special for our families into our centre celebrations.
All of our whānau were invited to share their wishes for Hiwa-i-te-rangi star and thoughts of those who have passed on for Pohutakawa star, which we displayed in the window in the foyer. We sang waiata and explored poi across all of our rooms to celebrate and even came together for a special celebration of waiata, poi and kanikani one morning.
In our Prep Room, we looked to the mararmataka (Māori calendar) to guide us. We learned that Winter and Matariki were the time to sit around the fire together and share ngā pakiwaitara (legends, stories) so that is just what we did! We also invited our whānau in to share stories with us from their cultures too.
