Here at Beststart Ascot, we review our environment and activities regularly to ensure that they are meaningful and engaging. Our experience changes often depending on the children’s interest and how we can better challenge everyone.

 We ensure that we make use of our environment and the variety of resources available. We have different areas that are purposely displayed to support their decision-making, independence, and choice while also challenging and extending their knowledge playfully.

Colours and fine motor skills has been a focus for us, and we have used a variety of sorting games along with incorporating the literacy and the environment into our play.

 These are things that can be altered for home use and are activities that we recommend for engaging your tamariki during lockdown. Some things you can try are

  • Sorting coloured beads into different bowls
  • Making pictures with rubber bands and nails
  • Writing and drawing with a variety of tools (pens, chalk, felts, paints etc)
  • Making garages, carports, houses, and such from cardboard boxes
