Our tahi children love anything that allows them the opportunity to get messy!  Over the last month our tamariki have had the chance to explore messy play while introducing early science.

Our kaiako have set up and facilitated a range of activities for the children to explore early science that also line up with their love of animals.  One activity we had set up was baking soda and vinegar.  We had baking soda all over the bottom of our trough with dinosaurs and coloured vinegar.  The children added the vinegar to the trough and watched it bubble away.  This experiment was our way of interpreting a volcano eruption with the children the vinegar was the same colours as we would expect to see lava.

This experience allowed our children to learn about reactions (the fizzing sound and bubbly look) between baking soda and vinegar but it also introduced them in a very basic easy to understand way around dinosaurs and what happened to them.  The activity promoted lots of conversations and had everyone engaged in the work at hand!
