Messy play is an essential part of a tamariki (childrens) development. The use of texture from simple ingredients create exciting experiences through exploration, manipulation and develop creativity. Early science and math concepts begin from these experiences planned by the kaiako (teacher). Learning about measurement, volume, weight, trajectory and many other concepts are just some of the early ideas we can share with our tamariki and pēpe (babies). Social development has always been a key area for a child to feel they have a place, make friends, begin to understand social concepts such as spatial awareness and sharing with their hoa (friend). Learning to use verbal communication while learning to identify some basic body language and facial cues. One of the best parts of Messy Play is that it is FUN!!! Tamariki have so much joy when they are involved in these activities. Whether it is a new experience or revisiting an old and familar experience there is alway learning happening and it can quite clearly be seen on the faces and heard through the noise of laughter, oh's and ah's as they interact with each other and the materials in front of them. Whaiwhia te kete mātauranga (Fill the basket of knowledge).
