In our nursery we love messy and sensory play! This week we had corn flour with silverware and this was so much fun. We used plates, spoons, jugs and cups! Our tamariki started off by feeling the corn flour slowly with their fingertips and exploring the textures. This soon turned into mixing, pouring, shaking, and throwing! We are very passionate about providing an environment that allows our infants and toddlers to explore and discover at their own pace.

Messy play allows our children to work together, share, explore with their senses, and encourages communication skills too. It encourages imaginative play as our children make their own games, and pretend together. It can boost confidence and self esteem, as our more shy, cautious children had time to watch and explore too!

It was fascinating seeing our toddlers cautiously explore the corn flour, observe others and make new discoveries. What an amazing way to problem solve and develop early science and mathematical concepts! After a few minutes this then became filled with excitement, laughter and joy! Some of our tamariki then explored the texture after rubbing it on their faces which became such a fun game.

We showed them photos of their faces and this became even more of a delight to throw around and enjoy! Lucky we had purchased a new vacuum cleaner this week!
