Autumn has arrived at our beautiful Bay Kindy and along with the changing and falling leaves, our tamariki have again discovered the wonderful world of' mini-beasts' venturing into the garden to enjoy our plants, trees and company, before the cooler weather moves them on.

Nga tamariki are very interested in identifying and investigating all about the different species of insects, arachnids, molluscs and invertebrates. The Kaiako are currently working with children to create vibrant and exciting study and research stations throughout the environment where tamariki  can further explore and learn more about the tiny creatures they share this incredible earth with.

They have been bewitched by butterflies (puurerehua) "it opens its mouth", seduced by snails (puupuu), "does it have a motor in it?" and bewildered by bumble bees (pii rorohuu) 'he's going to the moon'... They are taking in so many details and facts.

There have been incredible moments captured of the children with cicadas, praying mantis, spiders, caterpillars, moths and wasps and mosquitos. Their courage, curiosity and fearlessness has been evident in their thirst for knowledge about these tiny members of our ecology and food chains. And Kaiako are endeavouring to support this path of self-directed learning and discovery, safely and successfully, as everyone learns more about caring for and protecting our environment and all the living things that exist in it. We would love to also learn more about our native wetta, if even one would like to visit us

We look forward to you joining us on this journey and would be delighted if you would love to engage in this 'mini-beast' project along with us. Such a great opportunity to make links to our natural world and becoming aware of the delicate balance of nature and the role we have to play in protecting it - "ready for learning, ready for life

Ahakoa he iti, he pounamu -  despite being small, you are of great value.
