Moments of Mindfulness

1

Recently here at BestStart Burnside, in the Kāhu Room, we have started incorporating rest times into our days. These are times where our tamariki have the opportunity to slow down and relax within a busy day of fun learning! Our tamariki are invited to lie down where we play relaxing music or stories with the lights dimmed and fairy lights for them to look at to create a relaxing, cozy environment. We talk our tamariki through focusing on their breathing as they relax their whole bodies and minds. We invite them to close their eyes if they wish, to shut out any distractions and the busyness of their days. These moments of mindfulness allow our tamariki to recharge their bodies and minds while unwinding physically and emotionally in advance of a busy afternoon. These rest times have created a wonderful transition from lunch time to play, where our tamariki feel ready to take on the afternoon and we have seen wonderful positive outcomes from adding this into our days, supporting learning, development, self regulation and the well being of all tamariki. Our tamariki enjoy this time so much that they often ask for it in great anticipation while finishing their lunch!
