Monarch Butterfly Season!

It's Monarch Butterfly season at BestStart Oamaru kindy! The recent warm weather has helped ensure we have had several successful butterfly hatchings. Whanau have been involved in the success of our butterfly season through donations of extra plants for hungry caterpillars, and through proud tamariki showing their whanau our caterpillars, chrysalises and butterflies. The tamariki also share stories with us about their butterflies at home.

Through the butterfly life cycle the tamariki develop an understanding and respect for the living creatures in their world, which is part of our philosophy and culture here at BestStart Oamaru Kindy. We have been exploring the butterfly life cycle through a variety of ways, such as creating a wall display, reading books and creating our own beautiful purerehua (butterflies) through art!

Playing with science and nature such as watching animal life cycles is a great way for tamariki to observe things closely, develop their own working theories and ideas and then communicate these ideas with others through a variety of mediums in their arts and crafts.
