Colour everywhere, laughter in the air! Our tamariki had the BEST time celebrating Holi with bike races, powder throwing, and cultural learning. A beautiful, joy-filled way to explore new traditions and honour the amazing diversity in our centre.

This month, we celebrated Holi at our centre. With the increasing diversity at BestStart Mosgiel, we were thrilled to learn more about our Indian families and their various cultural celebrations.

Teaching children about different cultures is crucial, as it fosters understanding, respect, and appreciation for diversity from a young age. It helps build a more inclusive community and prepares children to thrive in a multicultural world.

The children had an absolute blast racing around the bike track and zooming through the colour stations, where teachers joyfully tossed coloured powder into the air. After their turns on the track, they gathered in groups to throw the powder themselves, watching in delight as it rained down and transformed the colours of their clothing!

Holi is a festival that celebrates spring, love, and new life. It is a colourful festival, with dancing, singing, and the throwing of powder paint. It is also known as the Festival of Colours.

The festival also relates to Indian myths and ancient stories that represent the triumph of good over evil. The colours have meanings: red symbolises love, blue represents the Hindu god Krishna, and green stands for new beginnings. As it is spring in India, we are celebrating with them.
